There’s a special election in Virginia’s 10th senate district tomorrow (Friday). The 10th senate district comprises areas in Amelia, Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Prince Edward, Fluvanna, Goochland, Louisa, Western Hanover, the Shady Grove precinct in Henrico and Powhatan counties.

Click HERE to use the “find my legislator” tool, where you can find your state senate district.

Registration is at the door. It begins at 4:30pm and ends at 6:30pm. You must be in line by 6:30pm, not in a parking lot or in traffic. You will need to show your driver’s license or valid government issued ID. Once everyone that was in line by 6:30pm is registered, the Republican Mass Meeting will begin.

Once voters are registered at the door, they will be given a wrist ban and asked to wait for the Republican Mass Meeting to begin.

Organizers have said you will want to eat before you come or bring something with you to eat while you wait for the Republican Mass Meeting to begin.

You may bring food and drinks into the gymnasium while you wait.

This is similar to the Republican Convention that was held at Buckingham High School in 2023. Once the chair of the Republican Mass Meeting and election officials are in place, each of the 7 candidates will be given 5 minutes to speak, in the following order as chosen by lots:

Amanda Chase

Jean Gannon

Luther Ciphers

Alex Cheatham

Duane Adams

Brian Hamlett

Shayne Snavely

Then the voting begins. The winner must win 50.1%.

If after the first round of voting, no one candidate wins 50.1%, then the bottom 3 candidates are dropped and the second round of voting takes place.

If after the second round of voting, no one candidate wins by 50.1%, then the candidate with the least votes drops one at a time until a winner emerges with 50.1%.

The winner will be declared the Republican nominee for State Senate in Senate District 10 and face off against Democrat Jack Trammell, most likely on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. The Special Election has not technically been called yet, as John McGuire has not resigned or vacated his seat.

Senate District 10 is a plus 20 Republican leaning district, which represents Amelia, Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Prince Edward, Fluvanna, Goochland, Louisa, Western Hanover, the Shady Grove precinct in Henrico and Powhatan counties. The Republican nominee who emerges out of Friday’s Republican Mass meeting will most likely win the senate seat.
