UPDATE: Jason King, last candidate in 27th for the GOP nomination, has been added.

In my previous post, I mentioned that there is a Chesterfield Republican Canvas on Monday, May 10 from 4pm-8pm, to choose the Republican nominee to run in the Special Election on June 15th to fill the seat of Delegate Sam Nixon, who is taking an appointment with the Governor. Today I would like to share with you more about the candidates for this Republican Canvass.

BTW, there is no Democratic Canvass to report. Only one candidate for the Democratic Party has announced so far and he doesn’t have a website up yet. His name is William Brown. More to come on him in future posts.

We asked each GOP candidate to provide us a 300 word statement that covered 1) bio and 2) why a tea party supporter would want to vote for them. Below are their answers. In the future, we will give candidates a questionnaire form and post their answers, but since the timeframe of this party canvas is so short (3 days), we chose this alternative method.

Please learn more about them and vote on Monday for your candidate if you live in the district and want to participate in the Republican nomination process. Need all the details for Monday? Go to our previous post to get those. You only have 4 hours to vote and it isn’t at your regular voting location, so make sure you visit our post to get all the details.

JAY KING: Following Sam Nixon as your next delegate will be a tough act to follow.  But if you are looking for another strong Christian conservative who knows his principles and will not back down in the face of enemy combatants, regardless of the party or leadership, then vote for me, Jay King.

Like many of you, I have been frustrated with many of our legislators’ votes.  Like you, I have desired to see change.  Last fall, I took action and became a supporter of the Richmond TEA Party.  Specifically, I joined the Legislative Committee where I lobbied legislators and assisted in passing the Virginia Health Care Freedom Act, which protects our right to choose our own health insurance.  As a strong proponent of the 10th Amendment, I was glad to push back on the intrusion of the federal government.

As your delegate, I will take my oath seriously to uphold and defend the US and Virginia Constitutions first, just like Del. Bob Marshall and AG Ken Cuccinelli have.  If legislators of either of the political parties desire to join me, then we will go a long way to returning to a limited constitutional government.

In addition, I believe we should get back to the basics of fiscal restraint, including cutting taxes and spending, and personal responsibility, including self-governance, which was a strong tenet supported by America’s Founding Fathers.

As I serve you, my fellow citizens, I will first and foremost honor God, of whom I am not ashamed.  A cornerstone of my beliefs is my unequivocal respect and support for human life from conception to the grave.  Then, I believe parents have the fundamental right to direct the upbringing and education of their children.  Therefore, I strongly support school choice. Vote Jay King on May 10th  www.friendsofjasonking.com

SHERMAN LITTON: It has been said that for evil to triumph all that needs to happen is for good people to do nothing. I could not agree more, and in light of the current state of our nation, that is why I am running for the House of Delegates.   I believe in God, Family and Country — in that order. My wife, Linda, and I brought our children up in the church and we have long been active members of Beulah United Methodist Church. I believe that it is important to elect leaders who set the right example for our children and our neighbors.   I have also been actively involved with my children in all their activities through their school years and even into their adult lives. Indeed, I still love nothing more than to go stay with my grandchildren to help out their Mom and Dad.  America needs more citizens involved in their communities. I was taught you have to give back to your community and that means getting out and helping whenever and wherever you can.  I have spent the better part of my life volunteering in Chesterfield in activities that have helped our children. I didn’t stop this when my own children were grown but continue today to do so and am proud that the County recognized me for the number of hours devoted to these efforts.   I have been fortunate enough to have worked most of my working career on one of the most important issues facing Chesterfield County — transportation.  I have gained invaluable experience over my life and am ready to put that work and experience to use representing the people of the 27th district. On the most pressing issues that face Chesterfield County “ transportation, the economy“ I have the background to make the right decisions.  I have long believed in community and that individuals thrive best when there is less government restricting them. That means we must be committed to a course of lower taxes, less government spending, more personal freedom and a demand for more personal responsibility. It’s important to be involved and educated about issues that affect you and your neighbors. Experience lends itself to wise decision and I believe I have the experience needed to represent the people of the 27th District. www.shermanlitton.com

ROXANN ROBINSON: My name is Roxann Robinson, and I am a self-employed optometrist running for the House of Delegates. Chesterfield has been home to me for twenty- five years. I have seen our community flourish during those years and have
enjoyed the exceptional quality of life we experience in Chesterfield County. I understand the challenges we are currently facing and I will work diligently to preserve our quality of life.

Like you, I have grown frustrated with the out-of-control spending and
mounting deficit in Washington. I pledge to oppose tax increases and will fight to reduce wasteful government spending in the General Assembly. I am tired of feeling that our voices are falling on deaf ears. We need honest and decent people to stand up and work to change our government at every level for the better. We all know that we cannot stand by idly any longer and allow politicians to advance their own self-interests at our expense. I want to represent you and your interests in the House of Delegates.

As an optometrist, I take great joy in helping my patients improve their vision; however, I have seen firsthand the problems with our healthcare system. The endless bureaucratic red tape only gets in the way of a patient and his or her doctor. These problems will only grow worse because of Obama’s healthcare reform. To improve our healthcare system, we need free market reforms, not more government regulations. Decisions on healthcare should be between a patient and doctor – not the patient and a government bureaucrat. I will support Governor McDonnell and Attorney General Cuccinelli’s efforts to fight national healthcare legislation.

It is for these reasons that I am running for the vacated seat in the 27th House District. For more information about me, please visit my website at www.roxannrobinson.com.

BRIAN SULLIVAN:

Hi, my name is Brian Sullivan and I am running for Delegate in the 27th House District.  Over the past year, federal spending has skyrocketed and elected officials seem to have forgotten the voters.  I plan to work with Governor McDonnell, Lt. Governor Bolling, and Attorney General Cuccinelli, to make sure that state government stays on track and protects the rights and freedoms of all Virginians from the bad decisions being made in Washington.

Personally, I am a middle class, hard working homeowner who knows what it’s like to be burdened by outrageous taxes and government policies that do not serve in the best interests of the people.  My core belief is that government is not the answer to all of our problems and it should certainly not be part of the problem.

As an enthusiastic conservative activist, I helped fight Governor Warner’s 2004 tax hike, one of the largest in Virginia’s history.  As your Delegate, I will fight to make sure that you and your family will never see a tax increase again.  Working as a strong supporter of many conservative candidates, I share your concerns and values and I promise to defend individual freedoms, state sovereignty, commonsense fiscal policy and lower taxes in Richmond.

While these are my core principles, I will also work hard on behalf of the citizens of Chesterfield to solve tough problems facing our state like the budget, transportation, education, and healthcare mandates.  Please, remember to vote on May 10th. I would appreciate your support and I look forward to the facing the tough challenges ahead.  I hope you will grant me the honor of representing you as your Delegate.  For more information, please visit my website, www.SullivanForDelegate.com and feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
